Driver Safety The Dangers Of Text Messages

Liam Keats

Text messaging and driving is a danger I believe we will hear about more and more in upcoming years. The major concern now is talking on your cell phone and driving. More and more states are requiring handless devices now to legally talk on your cell phone while in the car. Well doesn’t that say it all. If we should not be holding a phone to our head while driving what makes anyone think we should be reading or typing a message while driving? There are many times in life when I think multi-tasking is a great benefit to helping someone’s day move along more smoothly. Driving should never be one of those times. While on the road, one of the most dangerous places to be, people she be focused on what they are doing. How many times have we heard It only takes a second’ for someone to look away or not pay attention and there to be a fatal crash. As I get older and lose more and more my feelings of youthful invincibility I realize the dangers on our roads and freeways. We have become desensitized to the fact that we drive on highways at speeds of generally 65 plus mph. That is very fast when you are in a metal vehicle and surrounded by a bunch of other metal vehicles going at least that speed. With our windows up and music on we cruise down the highways not realizing the danger just outside our vehicles. With more cars on the road, more construction going on and higher risk all around why would we want to make the steaks even higher by taking our focus so completely off the roads? Your vision needs to be on the telephone screen to text and your hands need to be on the buttons. Those are two key elements to driving a car, eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. The reality for many drivers is the fear of the other people they are on the road with, not their own driving. Whether it is a brother, sister, mother, wife, husband, friend or child, we all have people we love and care about on the roads so lets consider that the people driving next to you are loved ones to someone and give your car and driving the focus it deserves. The sound of a text messaging beeping in is tempting, but it isn’t going anywhere. They can wait for your response too. So please do your part in helping to keep our highways and roads safe, do not talk on your phone or text message. While you are driving, just drive!
